Going Back to College a New Year’s Resolution? Test Drive College Offers a Free Starter Course

Returning to school is a common New Year’s resolution, as is starting an exercise routine or landing that new job. For people with college or graduate school on their list for 2011, Test Drive College Online offers free online courses to assess students’ abilities and prepare for enrollment in degree programs.
Many students interested in returning to school this year are unsure if they have the time or understand the demands of a degree program. These students can gain confidence through Test Drive College, and will have a stronger base to make informed decisions about the future of their education before enrolling in a degree program or paying tuition. Additionally, the transferrable course is worth as much as $2,000 towards the cost of tuition.
The Test Drive College process begins when prospective students complete the 20-question college competency exam on the website. An advisor then contacts the student by phone to discuss the test score, answer any questions about the free course, and assess the student’s academic and career goals. After the student agrees to enroll in a specific course he/she is provided the appropriate login information. Five-week courses at the bachelor’s level are currently offered in: Introduction to Psychology, English Composition I, Introduction to Criminal Justice, Introduction to Business and Medical Terminology. Courses start every week, and the content is reviewed and recommended by the American Council on Education (ACE). The credits are transferrable to a partner college or any number of other institutions.
Education Dynamics, a technology services and marketing information company for the higher education industry, introduced Test Drive College Online in mid-2010 following a successful pilot study. Known as Future Scholars, the project offered students a risk free opportunity to complete an online course before enrolling in a degree program or paying tuition. The study showed improved retention rates in the degree programs the students transferred to after completing the free course and advisement sessions. A graduate school version is also available through Test Drive Grad School Online.
